Pentium-class PCs can boot from devices other than the floppy or hard disk - for example, from the CD-ROM drive. This makes it possible to start the computer with a bootable mini-CD. (A regular CD will do and is actually more preferable as it is cheaper and faster, but we use "mini-CD" to emphasize the ease of use - it will fit in a shirt pocket or small handbag). PC-486 can be used, too. Just copy the contents of the mini-CD to the hard disk (about 150 MB all) and follow the instructions on how to boot the system from DOS. In fact, this is the preferred mode of boot-up for everyday use. DOS-enabled systems allow you to switch back to your favorite programs - just command "reboot" while inside the new system. A temporary storage medium for new content is essential, such as a floppy or a pen drive. You store content there, such as images, pages and tests, while you are still building its components. How to build content? You can practice here, right now! Check out the "Links" above. There are two trial images for inclusion in your new page. Use Firefox browser (from mozilla.org) or Internet Explorer 5.5 or 6 (WinXP has this). Once you decide that the content is complete, you save all your content in a single file. This file can now be burned into a new mini-CD then used to deploy content in PC-kiosks or local networks. You can also deploy the PC as an instant Internet server, with the added advantage that the CD can not be hacked. If you know how to take care of your files using a floppy, you can do the same with a mini-CD. Sure, some lecture and hands-on is essential for getting started, but you can reverse the process. Take the hands-on now (in this site) and if you get convinced that it works, you can take the lecture/tutorial, maybe for as short as 2 hours. More time might be needed to discuss and plan content and methodological considerations like teaching strategy (among teachers) or what information to include (among public/NGO/business officials). | |
